The worst performers of the session were Rakuten Inc (T:), which fell 4.56% or 46.0 points to trade at 962.0 at the close. Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co Ltd (T:) declined 4.28% or 118.0 points to end at 2636.0 and Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (T:) was down 3.54% or 25.0 points to 682.0.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 2101 to 1422 and 198 ended unchanged.
The , which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was down 4.18% to 17.20.
Crude oil for May delivery was up 0.24% or 0.15 to $61.74 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in June rose 0.20% or 0.14 to hit $69.15 a barrel, while the June Gold Futures contract fell 0.24% or 3.05 to trade at $1291.15 a troy ounce.
USD/JPY was up 0.01% to 111.36, while EUR/JPY fell 0.10% to 124.71.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.17% at 96.968.
